Frequently Asked Questions
What type of bucket will the Bucket Tops fit?
Any shape within the two size ranges will work with the Bucket Tops.Flat backed, round, oval or square.Small will fit the 8 quart size and Large will fit the 20quart size (5 gallons). You can even use paint bucket style buckets as well.
Are the Nylon Bucket Tops water proof?
Yes. All nylon Bucket Tops are made of 840denier nylon that is coated on the back to insurethat they are water proof.
How do I know what size Tail Bucket bags to order for my horse?
The correct bag size will be determined by theoverall length and thickness of your horse’s tail.
The “Regular” size bags will fit most Average tails where there is a natural tapering of the tail’s thickness towards the bottom of the tail and the hairs themselves are of an average courseness. Most Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas and Thoroughbreds will fall into this category.
If the tail is extremely long (as in many Arabians, Walking Horses and Morgans), but still tends to taper in thickness towards the bottom, the X-Large bag size will work best. Finally, for those breeds whose tails are very course and thick all the way to the bottom (most warm bloods, some stock breeds as well as some pony breeds) the Warm Blood sized bags will be needed.
IMPORTANT: the key to success with the Tail Buckets is to have the tail fill the bag so that the water needed is kept to a minimum.
How much water do I put into the Tail Bucket during washing?
You will want to add water in very small doses. Generally, about ½ to l cup of water is all that is needed to successfully use the Tail Bucket system. Tipping the bottom of the Tail Bucket upwards will redistribute the water into the tail during the washing process. You can always add more water as needed, but small amounts at a time is best.
How much shampoo do I use?
It is helpful to add some of your shampoo directly into the dry, empty Tail Bucket prior to putting it on the horse. That will help distribute the product more evenly during washing. There is no set rule as to how much you should use. Again, as you work it into the tail, you will be able to add more as needed to achieve a good lather and achieve your desired results.
Can I re-use the Tail Buckets once I cut the bottom for draining?
Yes. Once the bottom of the bag has been cut, if you need to do a second wash, or want to add more water for soaking, fold the bottom of the bag several times and then add a high quality, hinge style bag clip (pampered chef makes a good one) to the bottom. You may need to be a little more careful not to squeeze the bag in a downward motion, as the clip may not withstand the added water pressure as well as the uncut bag does. If saving the cut bag for a future washing, be sure to rinse the bag well and air dry it (inside-out if possible) before storing.
